Help Alyssa Earn Her Pilot's License!

The sky is not the limit! - Doing Community Service to Fund Flight Education

By: AlyssaMaeAviatrix

About This Project

Earning my pilot's license has always been a dream of mine since I was a child. When I was younger, I used to love going to my local airports, just to watch the planes. But when I was 10, my desire turned to wanting to fly them - rather than just watch.

Since then, the field of aviation has opened great new doors for me and the magic of it all has not gone away. When I was 12, I got to fly my very first plane through a program called "Young Eagles" that gives free flights to kids. In the past three years, I've accumulated about 7 hours of flight time. (Including aerobatic maneuvers!)I have also attended Women Soar, Air Academy, and Space Camp on full scholarship. Recently I became certified to fly over the Hudson River Area in New York. Currently I'm doing a free online ground school training course.

I do not want my accomplishments to end here though. Flying is my passion! The only thing standing between me and my flight training is the funding which can run $8,000-$12,000! (Over $100 an hour!) Earning my pilot’s license would mean the world to me!

Volunteering and helping others is another passion of mine. So far I've done about 110 hours of community service. I volunteer at my church, my local Nature Center, and my school. Soon I hope to be adding more destinations.

In exchange for flight lesson money, I will donate my time to charity.

One day, my goal is to use my pilot's license to also help charity. For example, some pilots fly sick patients to access medical care that's far away.

For every $100 I raise (which is almost one whole flying lesson), I will complete 2 (or more) hours of community service at the place of your choosing. I will promise to blog about all of my adventures in aviation; in fact I've already started here:, or on Twitter @AMAviatrix If you donate $200 or more, you can be recognized as a permanent sponsor on my website.

Update #4

Hi all!

This is my first update from Oshkosh, Wisconsin! I have been here three days so far, and I'm having an amazing time! I'll be doing everything from working at the museum to being a facilitator at the Aviation Camp! All of the staff are so nice to me here, and they've really taken me under their wing; as they are all older than me. Monday and today (Tuesday) were staff training all day. I had to do everything from fall off a podium being caught my all my staff to pretend to be a counselor training the staff while they acted like campers. The food here is amazing and so is my room - it's huge! I'm also so estacic that I won the MeritBooster iPad contest! I never believed I would get an iPad! As if this site hasn't been amazing for me enough already (helped me earn $955) - now it gave me an iPad too?!? I'm so psyched right now about my whole life. I feel so lucky to be me at this moment - (that could change tomorrow on the ropes course LOL- jk). This has been some of the best three days ever and I'll be writing a blog post when I take more pictures. Thanks for supporting me, it's people like you that make my dreams come true!

Update #3 Exciting News!

Hello all!

I'm very excited to announce that I earned myself a position as an intern in Oshkosh, Wisconsin this summer! For all who don't know, Oshkosh, Wisconsin is home to EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) and is practially a city of aviation! They have an avaiton camp for kids (Air Academy), an air museum, a couple airports, and the biggest airshow in the world! Anyways, I will be spending 2+ months there. I'm leaving around June 7-8 and won't be back until August! I'll be doing everything from being a camp counselor and living on EAA grounds to going to the airshow! I can't wait!!

Meanwhile, I would like to thank everyone who has donated and continues to donate. You don't know how much each donation is going to help me! I'm hoping by next summer I can earn my pilot's license... I can't thank you enough for your support!

Also, some random news. Yesterday (May 12), I went flying at Brainard Airport with Young Eagles. I got to fly over UCONN which was pretty cool. I also toured CT Aero Tech - where you can get your Airframe and Powerplant license for working on planes. And for anyone who knows about homebuilts, the original RV-1 flew in! It was signed by Vans himself! I even got to sit in it - see the picture lol. It was a pretty spectacular day.

For more updates check out You can contact me through there too, on the "Contact" page. Before I leave for Wisconsin, my goal is to complete 20 or so hours of community service. Enormous thanks to all of my supporters again!!

As of now, I have around $800 which comes out to be about 16 hours of community service, so if anyone has any preferences on where they would like me to volunteer; please contact me and let me know!

Thanks again for your support!! :]

    Hi Alyssa,

I'm glad to see that you're progressing on your project.

While I don't have a suggestions about where you should do your service - I wopuld like you to post updates with pictures etc. when you go out and do your service.  It would be really cool to see your community service in action.  (And to see your flight lessons in action when that part comes too!)

    All the Best,

Being a pilot myself - I'm so happy to see your project on MeritBooster.  Aviation has been a huge part of my life and it's opend up so many wonderful experiences.  I wish you the best of luck with this project and I'm so thrilled that, in exchange for the flight education, you are giving back to the community!
